Should sex education be taught in the nation's public schools, and if so what kind of education should be provided? (abstinence-only, abstinence-plus?)
My belief on sex education in the nation's public schools is that it should be taught on every level. The more education and information provided to students, the probability increases they will make healthy, safe, and moral decisions regarding their bodies.
I do not advocate sex education for children under the age of 12, but I do believe education of our bodies and the differences between boys and girls should be introduced. Addressing this issue appropriately with this young age group could aid in a healthy understanding of the human body, and alleviate any fears that children may have about being different from each other. Individuals who have a healthy body image will grow up to have increased self esteem, and more likely to make healthy decisions.
We live in an "anything goes" society where sex is glamorized and promoted everywhere you look. For this reason I believe it is highly appropriate to introduce sex education to students at an early age because kids are having sex earlier, and children are literally having children. If sex education is to be taught effectiviely in the public schools, it needs to be realistic and appropriately presented to the targeted age audience.
very nice blog Michelle, I agree with not having Sex Ed for kids under 12 but it is so important that our teens get informed. I'm afraid for my boys to have sex without me educating. At least you have a open mind.
