Should prenatal testing be routine for all pregnant women?

  1. We live in not only an age of technolgy that is advancing more rapidly than we can keep up with, but also a world where disease such as AIDS, diabetes, heart disease, Down syndrome, and many other genetic illness are becoming more prevalent. For these reasons I believe that prenatal screening should be part of the routine tests administered to pregnant women.

Prenatal screening and genetic testing can be used not only to determine whether a fetus has a disease, but also if there is an increased risk for having a genetic disease.Prenatal screening allows the mother or parents to be prepared in the event an abnormality is detected and further tests are needed.Knowing this information ahead of time can also cut down on further medical costs if a situation is able to be corrected prior to birth.

I DO NOT advocate the use of prenatal screening for the sake of aborting a fetus if there is a problem such as Down syndrome simply because the parents do not want to bother with an "imperfect" child, or cannot accept the limitations placed on a special needs baby. I realize there are many ethical and moral issues that come into play when making these decisions. I believe there are already to many options for people to unnecessarily abort because these children do not fit in with their lifestyle.

Whereas I am not a parent and have no plans to have children, if I were pregnant I would want to know everything there is to know and be fully prepared regarding the child I was carrying.

  2. I agree with you that pre-natal screening should be a must for expecting mothers and that it should not be used for the possible abortion. Espicially if they are wanting to abort the child because it is a Down syndrome baby and I do not agree with abortion at all. I also think that along with pre-natal testing/screening that the expecting mother should also take pre-natal vitamins to help assure that she is consuming the proper amount of vitamins. I also agree with you again about if I were to become pregnant that I would definately want to know everything that there is to know so that I would know what is going on with the baby inside me. I enjoyed reading your posting.

  3. I like your honesty and I value the opinion you gave on why you disagree with prenatal screening. I had never thought of that way. I can honestly say when I had the screening for the chance of deformaties I was a nervous wreck. Forunately I didn't have to make the decision and if I did I can't say which way I would go. You gave me something to think about.
