How would I rate my preventative practices? What are some ways I can improve my health and what preventative practices do I already implement?

  1. My personal health philosophy is very important to me and goes beyond the scope of the classroom. My belief is that if we are going to be health educators regardless of the chosen area, we are to present and conduct ourselves in a healthy way. That cannot be established, and we will not be taken seriously if we are not living by the health standards set by our personal philosophy.

For these reasons and those based on the preventative practices chart indicated in the textbook, my score was high. Of course there is always room for improvement as maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a life long venture.

I believe now more than ever people have to be engaged and pro-active in the choices they make in every area of health; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. When one of these areas is out of whack all other areas are effected, like the domino effect. I know all too well how difficult it is to be "balanced" in all of these areas at once, and most of the time I am not, but I constantly work at it on a daily basis.

My primary problem with any of these areas of health is consistency. While I am very particular about what I eat I often skip meals, and do not incorporate a well rounded diet. The same goes for exercising. While I am an avid outdoors person and engage in activities such as walking, cycling, hiking, and working out at least five days out of the week, the minute the weather turns cold I become a hermit. Lack of sleep is a big issue with me as I suffer from insomia much of the time which wrecks havoc in so many ways such as lack of concentration, and being tired throughout the day.

I realize these are areas that need additional attention so I have started an exercise log and a food journal that I write in daily. These tools have already proved to be invaluable as I can see my progress or lack of and adjust accordingly. I believe I will be successful in obtaining my goals of becoming consistent and increasing my health awareness to lead a healthier life. It all comes down to how much you really want something!

  2. Hello Michelle,

It was very interesting to read your blog. I agree that sometimes it gets challenging to take time out for yourself and be consistant. I have a little one and for me taking time out for myself gets very chanllenging sometimes. I try to motivate myself by keeping journal as well and I work hard on my time management skills.
    Thanks for sharing....
